Post-Master's Application Procedure
For Family Nurse Practitioner and Nursing Education
- Submit a complete, special application to the School of Nursing
- Submit an official transcript from their master’s degree program in nursing;
- Submit two letters of reference
- Submit a copy of current license as a registered nurse and advanced practice nurse (if applicable) in Illinois.
- If accepted, apply to the NIU Graduate School as a Student-at-Large and to submit an official undergraduate transcript to the Graduate School.

PLEASE NOTE: Application deadlines for admission to the Graduate School for nursing programs are February 15 for summer and fall admissions, and October 1 for spring admissions. These are firm deadlines which means that all application materials and supporting documents must be received by the Graduate School by those dates. This applies to admission into post-master's certficate programs and M.S. degree programs.
Post-Master's FNP Prerequisites
- Master's degree in nursing from an ANCC or CCNE-accredited program
- Undergraduate-level health assessment course prior to enrolling in NURS 519
- An advanced community health nursing analysis course (equivalent to NURS 571) OR a course in diversity within community systems (equivalent to NURS 515)
- Graduate-level biological and behavioral concepts course OR Pathophysiological concepts in Nursing-a deficiency course will be assigned if credit in a pathophysiology course is more than 10 years old.
