Admission in Health Studies Programs
Public Health
Public health is an open enrollment program. That means that admittance to the public health program can be achieved with just two additional steps beyond regular University admission. Here's how:
- When you apply for admission to NIU, specify on line 21 of your application that you want public health to be your major by entering the code 648 for health administration or 647 for every other focus area (health promotion, environment & health, aging & health).
- After you are admitted to the University, make an appointment with the public health adviser, Rebecca Pritchard, who will help you sign up as a major and assist you in planning your schedule.
Health Education
- Make an appointment with Julie Amon, academic adviser for the College of Health and Human Sciences. Julie will assist you in planning your schedule during your freshman and sophomore years.
- Three requirements must be met prior to admissions to upper division core courses and field experiences in Health Education (AHPH 301, AHPH 400, AHPH 405, AHPH 484, & AHPH 486). These requirements include:
- Cumulative GPA of 2.5
- Successful completion of AHPH 207
- Successful completion of the Illinois Certification Testing System (ICTS) Basic Skills Test
- After successful completion of all general education requirements and the above mentioned, candidates may declare their major with the teacher certification coordinator, Andrea Hein. She will assist you in planning your schedule through the completion of your degree.
